If there's one universal truth about kids, it's that they're messy! They play in the mud, they draw on the walls, they eat their pasta without spilling it on the surrounding surfaces...but what about the mess they can't control? If they're sick or potty trained, sometimes the mess just happens to them, not to the mess themselves.
Well, parents, fear not! We've got tips for cleaning up an accidental mess: Whether it's a nighttime bathroom accident, a sudden nosebleed or throwing up in bed, here's how to keep your mattress looking like new again!
cleaning urine from mattresses
We know that when you are awakened by a surprise in bed in the middle of the night, falling asleep is the first thing on your mind. .But the most important aspect of fighting urine stains and odors is speed! You want to make sure you get in there and wipe off the fluid as soon as possible to prevent it from seeping further into the mattress layers. do you haveInner mole, memory foam, orextra top foam– The first step is always, always get the liquid out of there!
clean fresh urine
We've said it once and we'll say it again, it's important to get as much fluid as possible out of the mattress as quickly as possible. Once urine gets on the mattress, it's hard to get it out -- and it's hard to get rid of the smell, too!
what do you need:
sodium bicarbonate
clean towels
cold water
laundry detergent
white vinegar
Spray bottle
vacuum
Step 1: Remove the bedding and toss the sheets in the washing machine ASAP! Urine stains harden quickly, so you should wash affected bedding immediately. If the smell persists after washing, add 1 cup of white vinegar and wash again.
Step 2: Dry (don't rub!) the area. Grab a clean towel and blot the soiled area to absorb as much liquid as possible.
Step 3: Spray the vinegar solution onto the area. Mix a solution of two parts cold water, one part white vinegar, and a small amount of laundry detergent (sample mix for a standard size spray bottle: 2-3 tablespoons dish soap, 1 cup white vinegar, 2 cups cold water).
Step 4: Let the solution-soaked mattress work for at least 15 minutes. After the prescribed time, dry the area with a new clear cloth to absorb excess fluid.
Step 5: Cover the area with baking soda and let it sit for 8-10 hours.
Step 6: Vacuum the baking soda.
Step 7: Check the Mattress! If you still notice the smell/stain, repeat steps 3-6 as needed.
clean urine stains
If sleep is getting the better of you and you're only trying to clean an old urine stain, the ingredients are basically the same as for a fresh urine stain, but the steps are slightly different. That is, it takes a little longer to get them out!
what do you need:
white vinegar
laundry detergent
cold water
plastic
towel
Step 1: Mix a solution of two parts cold water, one part white vinegar, and a small amount of laundry detergent (sample mix for a standard size spray bottle: 2-3 tablespoons dish soap, 1 cup white vinegar, 2 cups cold water). Apply enough to the stain Measure to ensure that the mattress is soaked to the depth of the original stain.
Step 2: Cover the area with plastic wrap. Do not blot, rub or attempt to absorb excess liquid! You want to cover it and let it sit for 24 to 48 hours. Covering the solution with a thin film will prevent it from evaporating and allow her to work on the stain.
Step 3: Remove the plastic wrap and allow the mattress to air dry.
Step 4: If the mattress is still stained, repeat the process. It is normal for dark spots to require some treatment before they disappear.
Step Five: Rinse the mattress with water. Check the vinegar solution for any drying residue, spray it with water and pat dry with a towel.
remove urine smell
Sometimes, no matter how quickly you get urine on your mattress, it still has a lingering smell. There's nothing more relaxing than lying in bed and smelling urine -- or trying to lull your little one to sleep. But don't worry, you can still get those smells out of your body after they've taken over!
what do you need:
sodium bicarbonate
vacuum
Step 1: Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the mattress. Try to focus more on the area of the urine stain.
Step 2: Let the Baking Soda Set! You need to spend at least 5 to 10 hours smelling. We recommend that you do this process overnight to make sure you have enough time.
Step 3: Vacuum the baking soda from the mattress. If the smell persists, do it again!
cleaning vomit from mattresses
It's gross to say, but vomit comes in all shapes and sizes - however, luckily for parents, it's the same no matter how you clean it up! Like peeing on a mattress, timing when you spit out your mattress (and bedding!) is of the essence.
fresh vomit cleaning
what do you need:
clean and dry cloth
absorbent paper towel
bowl or container
hot water
Soap for clothes or dishes
Alcohol
sodium bicarbonate
Step 1: Remove all vomit from the mattress ASAP! The longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove odors and stains.
Step 2: Wash All Bedding! Be sure to wash on a higher temperature to remove any odors and any stains/bacteria.
Step 3: Clean any vomit residue from the mattress. Blot up any remaining liquid with clean, dry paper towels. Make sure to pat instead of scrub! Scrubbing can spread germs and residual fluids that can embed them in the fibers of the mattress, making it difficult to get out.
Step 4: Clean the mattress after absorbing as much fluid as possible. Fill a bowl with warm water and a little dish soap. Dip the cloth in water, wring it out, and blot the stain. Pat dry with another clean towel to absorb moisture.
Step 5: Time to Disinfect Your Mattress! Make a solution of half white vinegar and half water. Spray on affected areas. Let it dry completely and repeat the process until the stain is gone.
Step 6: Use isopropyl alcohol to make sure the last few germs are gone! Pour some into a spray bottle and spray on the stained area. Let it dry completely.
smell vomit cleaning
For this, you only need one basic product: baking soda! Baking soda is great for neutralizing odors and absorbing any residual moisture from the cleaning process. Spray liberally on the vomit and let it sit for at least a day to absorb the smell.
Now, unlike other cleaners, you can sleep on your mattress while baking soda works its magic! If you're concerned about the baking soda soaking into your sheets, put a washcloth on the baking soda before making your bed.
Final step: Vacuum off the baking soda and change the sheets!
Cleaning Blood Stains from Mattresses
Unfortunately, for some children, a dry nose or severe allergies can lead to spontaneous midnight nosebleeds. Since blood is one of the hardest stains to get off a mattress, do your best to get it out as quickly as possible!
expert tips: Always use cold water when handling blood stains! Hot water causes blood proteins to coagulate and become embedded more deeply in fibers.
Cleaning Blood Stains from Mattresses
Since blood is the toughest stain to get on, the list of ingredients needed is also the longest! Don't be intimidated by this - in just a few steps, you can give your mattress a new look!
what do you need:
small bowl
microfiber clothes
soft brush
Circulation fan
vacuum
sodium bicarbonate
hydrogen peroxide
oxygen bleach
enzyme based detergent
tissue
Step 1: Delete allbedding.Immediately treat any bedding and clothing stains with a strong enzyme-based detergent (Arm & Hammer or All are good choices) in cold water.
Step 2: Clean recent stains. Use paper towels to absorb as much moisture as possible.
expert tips: When applying or spreading the solution, be sure to work from the edge of the stain towards the center of the stain. If you don't, you risk spreading the stain further.
Step 3: Start With Cold Water! Small, fresh blood spots can usually be removed by drying the area with a cloth soaked in cool water. If this works and there are no blood spots, allow the mattress to air dry without any bedding for at least eight hours.
Step 4: Mix the cleaning paste with ½ cup of baking soda and ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide in a small bowl. Using your brush (or an old toothbrush!), spread the paste over the stain. When the hydrogen peroxide reacts with the blood, the mixture will foam. Let stand for at least 30 minutes or until it stops bubbling. Wipe away the paste with a clean cloth as you go.
Step 5: Let the mattress dry completely.
Step 6: If the stain persists, try a laundry stain remover (Zout or OxiClean are great) to break down the stain molecules. Put some remover on a damp microfiber cloth. Apply the product to the stain and let it work for at least 15 minutes. Then wipe off the stain remover with a clean microfiber cloth and cold water.
Step 7: Let the mattress dry completely again.
Step 8: Treat the affected area with oxygen bleach. Make a paste by mixing ½ cup dry bleach and ½ cup water in a small bowl. Use a brush to apply the paste to the stain. Let the paste work for at least 2 hours. Then soak a clean cloth in cold water to remove the bleach.
Step 9: Allow the mattress to air dry for 8-10 hours before adding bedding or using it.
