If you're anything like us, then you've seenlupinePop on your Netflix feed, hit play, and never look back. (And then, about four hours later, you might be yelling at Netflix for only giving us the first five episodes.) The French Netflix original, loosely based on Maurice Leblanc's novel, revolves around Assane Diop (Omar Sy) Expand. He shoulders the mission of clearing his father's name. Inspired by "The Gentleman Thief" Arsène Lupin, he is on "one last job" to find out the truth about his father and bring down those responsible for his death.
wait, this has something to do with animeLupine the Third？
Name Ampu Kepakan:So, first things first. For all you anime/manga fans, this series has nothing to do with Lupine the Third or Hayao Miyazaki.Cagliostro Castle. However, it was based on Maurice Leblanc's original Lupine story - which also inspired Monkey Punch to create his comics and this version of the character.
Bashir Yusuf:the only thing i knowLupine the ThirdThat's when his name came up in Lupe Fiasco's lyrics on Kanye West's 2005 hip-hop record, Touch The Sky.
user-agent:Lupine is not as famous as Sherlock Holmes (Even though they clashed in one of Leblanc's stories) or James Bond, but he has some major pop culture landmarks. "Touch the Sky" is one of them. he also appeared in the popular video gamePersona 5.but as the grandfather of the protagonist of the manga and anime seriesLupine the ThirdThis may be his greatest claim to fame.
go through:Despite all this talking about anime, lupineThe Netflix series has nothing to do with these, so don't worry about needing any background knowledge. This is just a real-world character introduction and doesn't detract from the fun of the series.
It's a very special sweet spot for me. It was a "fun" heist. pictureoceanseries (but notocean 8), or TV seriesenjoy.I really like it. Well, that was a lie. I am really happy.
it has style and substance
user-agent:I think this series has one of the best pilots I've seen. We've been complaining about how TV shows in this Netflix era meander, often taking too long to define characters and stakes.lupineNot that problem. The first episode was a bit of a throwback. It felt more like a traditional TV pilot that introduced all of our players and their many backstories. We are shown (not told) who Lupine is, and why he is so skilled. We learn about his motivations (his father's death) and his possible weaknesses (his family). There was also an incredible robbery at the Louvre. action. features. mechanism. It got me right from the start.
go through:That pilot, like a good magician, made me look in one direction only for the reveal to completely captivate me by the end. It's also very simple. We see Assane working as a cleaner at the Louvre. He commented on some jewelry. It starts. It's all very elegant. Nothing too complicated. The man had a plan and he executed it brilliantly. Someone mentioned his skill and technique, and it paid off later. It makes sense to have a Wikipedia hack later. Everything fits together perfectly.
I feel like there's a trust between the filmmakers and the audience. You don't need to know who the character Lupine is. They said everything you need. But at the same time, they don't make it easy for you. Wait, everything will be explained.
user-agent:And it's all done in style, too. you mentionedoceanmovie (noocean 8), I couldn't help but think of them too. The looks, the footprints, the music choices, all contribute to the "cool" air that permeates the series as a whole.
This is essentially a "new" character, in a "new" series, and what the writers have managed to do is make him feel there. Put on a long black coat and plan the robbery. To be clear, the original Arsène Lupine did not appear in the series. He is Assane's inspiration.
go through:Even so, Lupine doesn't look like a ghost hovering over Assane. He never mentioned Lupine directly. Everyone around you brings it up. The detectives hunt him down, and Assane's wife rolls her eyes when she hands their son a copy of Lupin's book. Assane is not a Lupine cosplayer, he just becomes Lupine in his own story over time. Again, we never show all of this, except for the moment we see the inside of Assane's house. It's a bunch of (I think) swag from a previous robbery. Again, there is an elegance to the writing.
The only thing this series did was make me want to get the original Lupine book. The idea of a "gentleman thief" is fascinating. Omar Sy and this show legitimized an idea.
A master class in updating classic stories
user-agent:This is a great adaptation for another reason. Often, writers and producers take inspiration from some source material and try to update and modernize it without doing anything new or different. andlupine, creators George Kay and François Uzan did more than just make their protagonist Blake. The fact that Assane and his father are from Senegal plays a key role in this story. From the implicit and overt racism they all face, to how it affects their lives and histories, the series doesn't shy away from addressing them. But more importantly, he does it in a subtle, understated way, and it serves the story. I love how every white guy on the show tries to save himself after making some flippant comments about Assane's race or appearance.
go through:This nuance matters. It's the everyday racism we hear about, but aren't addressed, or worse, dismissed.
What do you think of Assane's "calmness" in carrying out his plan? Do you think everything is too convenient? I have an idea that there was never really (don't know if I used that reference correctly) the "deus ex machina" story. Of course, Assane never told the public about his plans, but the way it all came together made it all look well thought out. Like in the previous episode, when he got into a run-in with the villains, instead of trying to make a big splash (calling the train driver, etc.), he sent a quick message to the cops who were chasing him. Again, it turns to elegant writing.
user-agent:I don't really see it as "easy". When we meet this character, he has become a master thief. He is by far the one who has honed his craft to perfection. That's what's great about it. That's what makes it cool. God knows audiences love this type of character. A person who can figure out everything. Who is always two...three...five steps ahead of everyone else. Think about Columbus. Think Sherlock Holmes. Think about Batman.
I also think this particular style of storytelling can be traced back to LeBlanc's original novel. (Even how Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes.) Lupine was always in control of every situation he was in. Unless it's not. When that happens, it makes the drama more intense and interesting. When Moriarty shows up, we know Holmes is going to be in trouble. When the doctor has to confront the master, we are terrified for her. This is an ancient technology. But it works.
go through:In that regard, too, it's a refreshing metaphor. We've gone from what characters are supposed to be (Columbus, Sherlock Holmes, Batman) to everything having to have an origin story (think Perry Mason, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, Bale and *maybe* Pattinson's Batman), it's refreshing to have a story that begins at the height of a character's abilities.lupineIt has some flashbacks, but mostly for character development. As much as I love Assane's character, it's so cool to see him being a gentleman thief, I definitely don't want towet fieldStyled in flashbacks, we see him learning his craft. This always just delays the story.
Best new series of 2021?
user-agent:I know it's only the second week of the year, but I'velupineConsidered one of my best shows of 2021. We see Omar Sy excel at a few things -jurassic world,X-Men: Days of Future Past, especially inunselfish- but i have a feelinglupinewhat will you do for himlutherMade it for Idris Elba. It's all his and he really shines.
go through:This is her breakout role and I can't wait to see what happens next.
question. Where do you want to go for the rest of the season? How long do you think they can go? As you mentioned, there's an underlying feeling here that for Assane, this is his last show, to deal with his father's death. I personally hope the show will answer that question, probably in the next five episodes. I really don't want to see him struggle with this for three seasons. like thissteal money, the first season ended naturally (also technically in two parts). They took the money and left. Then, like Michael Corleone, they were pulled back. What are your predictions for the next installment of season 1 and any possible future seasons?lupine？
user-agent:I agree. I hope this arc ends in season one. That said, I think this character fits the anthology format, with each season being its own standalone story. Although I don't want to see Assane struggling with the same damn problem for five seasons (see:pen name), I love this character and want to see him in more adventures.
go through:adventure! This would be perfect.
